BIG SKY MIND AND CLUB DREDD c 1997

Warning! Someone from the past is circulating photos from the 90's indie circuit and I'm innit!! It's so Lily Bass (Gossip Girl)-blast-from-the-past moment!

This photos popped out in my facebook account and I wanna share them with you. It was this day 9-11 years ago, pre-Y2K bug, pre-wi-fi!

While most of my 'now' friends were dancing at the now-defunct Mars club in Makati, I was in Kyusi indie/punk/rock scene. It was way different from where I go to now. During the 90's, Big Sky Mind Gallery Cafe was my hang-out. Me and my friends met a number of nineties musicians in that cafe. We've seen many great unsigned bands perform. Big Sky crowd 10 years ago were really the nineties romantics- unemployed striving artists, painters, musicians, filmmakers, poets, writers, etc. In short, pa-art. We just got out of the university then and I and my friends would strike conversations with anyone who's fun enough to chat at the bar, only to find out that they play in some famous hardcore rock bands or they have directed movies which we will later find out, won some international awards. The early years of Big Sky were pure artist's haven. It was the "Reality Bites" time when everyone sticks on to their ideals. A lot of us were in-between jobs, fighting NOT to compromise our art or be called 'sell-outs.' Everyone were torn between integrity and the need to pay bills. Soon, each one of us from that batch of regulars would slowly disappear from the cafe- getting married, getting jobs, putting up companies with people they met inside. I dropped by Big Sky recently to get my fill of their legendary Aligue Pasta and Tofu Balls. I noticed how the crowd are so different now. The change was inevitable, Their generation is way much different from us. Many of them are young achievers (19 yr-olds with record deals) or are earning from their art (graphic artists, musicians). Unlike a decade ago, many opportunities are open to younger group and music and art are more accessible as medium and as a career.

That was me with blonde hair and that's Knel from Skies of Ember and now of the Dorques .

Trivia: Many people think that the first Dredd was in Km.12, but the first ever Club Dredd was somewhere in Timog. It had reached its height in Km. 12 with Eraserheads, Rivermaya (still when Bamboo was the lead vocals), Put3Ska, Agaw-Agimat, P.O.T., Color it Red, and many more, playing inside this dingy CBGB-ish club. This was also the setting for what have become my Baptism of pot. ;P

You will still notice this foyer if you pass by Km.12 in EDSA. They painted the exterior black and since its closing, dirt and vandalism covered the wall and yes, plaid pants was the alt thing back then.

This was where all nineties OPM/Alternative bands once congregate!
Di pa uso paminta nun, kaya baklang bakla ako when I would go there. lolz
